Police release surveillance video of White Center robbery

Police have released surveillance video of Tuesday night's pawn shop robbery in White Center.

Four men wielding baseball bats and handguns stormed into Pawn Pros at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The thieves roughed up customers and beat an employee before making off with an unknown amount of jewelry.

According to Sgt. John Hall of the King County Sheriff's Office, the men entered the packed store and demanded that everyone inside get down on the ground. The owner of the store told police the robbers violently shoved a 9-year-old girl to the ground before smashing a number of jewelry cases and stealing what they found.

Seal found dead at Lincoln Park with bullet in lung

Seal found dead at Lincoln Park with bullet in lung

After a mature male sea lion was found dead on a Lincoln Park beach Monday, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife investigators performed a necropsy on the animal on Thursday.

West Seattle’s Seal Sitters posted these results on their blog:

The moderate to advanced decomposed animal had been scavenged by birds and other creatures and had a shark bite wound. Muscle and tissue were closely examined for trauma and hemorrhage; evidence of a “penetrating” wound, suspected to be that of a bullet, was found deep in the tissue and tracked back to the entrance wound. Bullets create small entrance holes that are often difficult to detect on the exterior. The head and lungs were removed for further examination and radiographs. That afternoon, a bullet was removed from the left lung lobe. Additionally of note, the intestines were twisted and will be examined – causes can include fishing lures and line, plastics, tumors or possible trauma from the wound. Organ tissue samples were taken for histopaths.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration law enforcement is investigating.

School board approves new STEM school at Boren

The Seattle School Board unanimously approved the district’s short-term capacity management plan designed to address enrollment growth in Seattle schools. That plan includes reopening the Boren school building (5950 Delridge Way S.W.) to house a K-5 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) option school during the 2012-13 school year.

The Boren school will serve the Denny International and Madison middle school service areas, where an estimated 11 additional homerooms are needed. The goal is to serve all elementary school students in West Seattle. After one year at Boren, the district plans to move the STEM school to Fairmount Park, Genesee Hill or Hughes school.

The board also approved the installation of 25-35 portables at various school sites across the district. The exact number of portables and their locations will be based on data obtained during the district’s open enrollment period, February 27 through March 9.

Shooting victim was last of 3 Jacksonville sons

Shooting victim was last of 3 Jacksonville sons

The man shot and killed in the Morgan Junction this weekend was the last living child of a Jacksonville, Fla. mother who had already lost two other sons to violence.

Michael “Travis” Hood, 36, was shot three times Saturday night and died hours later at Harborview Medical Center.

“When you lose one child you have to keep going because you still have more,” said Hood’s mother Brenda Hood said. “Now I only have my granddaughter left. I don’t have time to collapse just yet.”

Having grown up in the Paxon neighborhood of Jacksonville, Hood moved to West Seattle 4 months ago after his close friend Mark Lee, 37, was fatally shot in an alleged home invasion.

“We grew up in a rough neighborhood with a lot of drugs and murders in recent years,” Hood’s cousin Bryan Corbitt said.

Time to report storm damage

Time to report storm damage

Residents and businesses that suffered property damage or other losses in the recent storm may be eligible for assistance to get their property back in order.

Eligibility is determined through a damage assessment process which takes into account the total reported losses within King County. In order to compute the losses, individuals and businesses are encouraged to submit reports to the King County Office of Emergency Management (OEM).

You can submit damage reports online or by calling 1-800-523-5044 during business hours. Both reporting systems will be open until 5 p.m. on January 31.

Residents should note that submitting a report to OEM does not guarantee reimbursement.
