Sunshine moves out making way for rain

Sunshine moves out making way for rain

We've had six sunny, dry weekends in a row, and we're in the middle of weekend number 7. However, Mother Nature is going to throw a wrench in our streak on Sunday, as some of us will contend with spring showers.

The annual 'Beat the Bridge' run in Seattle is early Sunday, and we may see a few initial showers to keep the runners cool in the morning.  By later in the afternoon, the showers will become more frequent as a warm front crawls over the top of the region.  Mainly cloudy skies and the scattered light rain will cool us back into the low to middle 60s on Sunday afternoon.

The cold frontal portion of this disturbance drives in early Monday, and at that point, we're in for much wetter weather.  We'll kick off the work week with steady rain for the early commute, and highs will cool down into the upper 50s to about 60 degrees.  Breezy south winds over the waterfront will make it feel even cooler--look for gusts in the neighborhood of 30 mph on Monday.

Driver alert: Construction continues to impact viaduct traffic

Drivers should prepare for continuing traffic impacts on the Spokane Street Viaduct.

The eastbound off-ramp at Fourth Avenue South has been closed since mid-April, when eastbound traffic was temporarily shifted onto the new viaduct structure in order to make room for repairs and repaving of the bridge deck on the old structure. It had previously been reported that the Fourth Avenue off-ramp would reopen next week (May 22 or 23), however, this has now been delayed.

SDOT now expects the Fourth Avenue off-ramp to be open for the morning commute on Wednesday, May 30, at which point the eastbound off-ramp at First Avenue South will close. It is expected the First Avenue South off-ramp will then remain closed for about four weeks.

Work stoppage at Port of Seattle after worker dies in accident

SEATTLE - A longshore worker has died of injuries he suffered in a workplace accident Thursday on Harbor Island, triggering a day-long work stoppage at the Port of Seattle.

Medics and emergency personnel were called to the scene, Terminal 18 at SW Florida Street and 13th Avenue SW, at about 6:30 p.m. after receiving a report of an injury accident.

The injured worker was hospitalized and later died of his injuries, said Hector Castro of the state Department of Labor & Industries.

Few details were available about the accident, which happened at SSA Marine Terminal and remains under investigation. Preliminary reports said the worker was pinned between a forklift and a shipping container.

Longshoremen's Union Local 19 called a 24-hour work stoppage at the Port of Seattle after the worker's death, as allowed under their labor contract. The work stoppage is intended to allow workers time to grieve and to give investigators an opportunity to find out what happened.

The longshore worker's death is the 19th workplace fatality so far this year in Washington state, according to the L&I website.
